Animal Technician Job at UC San Diego – Job DESCRIPTION

Provide routine animal husbandry for Divisional research animals, which may include mice, rats and other rodents, zebrafish, Xenopus, and new animal models, as they are introduced. California Jobs

Incumbent will perform the following duties: daily health observations; clean, change, and sanitize cages, fish tanks and rooms; water and feed animals; monitor environmental conditions, report sick or dead animals to supervisor or the university’s Animal Care Program representative; log animal health and census reports into computer database; and maintain specified records on assigned animals, rooms, and facilities.

Employee will wash and sterilize caging equipment; organize, sweep, mop, and sanitize floors, walls, sinks, etc. of facilities, equipment and supplies; operate and maintain facilities equipment (i.e., autoclave, cage washer, etc.), and repair or report facilities or equipment repair problems to supervisor and/or Facilities Maintenance.

Perform or assist with euthanasia and disposal of dead animals; restrain animals for various technical procedures; set up breeders and/or wean animals as needed; perform tail cuts and various animal identification procedures, including tattoos, ear clips/tags and ear punch as requested; and collect tissue and/or administer medication/treatment as needed. Prepare and complete shipping and receiving of animals; and perform other research support and administrative duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS for Animal Technician Job at UC San Diego

  • Graduation from high school or GED, completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the AALAS, and one year of animal care experience; or high school graduation or GED and two years of animal care experience; or a combination of education and experience.
  • AALAS certification ALAT or higher preferred.
  • Ability to use and understand basic medical terminology
  • Sensitivity to the needs of caged laboratory animals in compliance with AAALAC standards.
  • Skill and knowledge in the provision of care and husbandry, including transgenic, genetically engineered or modified, animals and other immuno-compromised animals.
  • Skill and knowledge in the provision of care for fish and aquatic species.
  • Skill and knowledge to apply principles of sanitizing and disinfecting cages in compliance with AAALAC standards.
  • Skill to operate and maintain mechanical equipment (i.e., autoclave, cage washer, janitorial equipment, etc.).
  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
  • Ability to follow written and oral direction, and complete assignments in a timely manner including the ability to be thorough in performing assigned tasks.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills to effectively communicate with lab and other campus personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Skill to understand and deliver clear messages.
  • Skill in the humane methods of euthanasia (CO2) in lab animals, including the appropriate disposal of dead animals.
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations that govern the housing and management of laboratory animals as applied to the University of California.
  • Skill and knowledge of working with sterile techniques and supplies.
  • Knowledge of breeding/weaning animals.
  • Experience working with MS Office programs, internet, and other database management systems. Must have the ability and willingness to increase and update knowledge and skills as needed.


  • AALAS certification ALAT or higher preferred.
  • Position contingent upon satisfactory background check and pre-employment physical examination clearance.
  • Valid California Drivers License.
  • Work in biohazard and radioactive areas.
  • Wear protective clothing and equipment.
  • Work overtime, weekends and holidays.
