Janitor Job Description

Janitors perform routine cleaning and maintenance work to maintain optimal appearance in their workplace. The specific demands of the position can vary widely depending on the building to which the janitor is assigned. Common duties include cleaning floors through a combination of mopping, sweeping, and vacuuming, waste removal, window cleaning, restroom maintenance, equipment cleaning, landscape maintenance, and minor repairs on simple equipment.

Janitors are involved in the general cleaning of the buildings and office suites, keeping them maintained and in good condition. Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors, clean restrooms, dust, water plants as needed, window and glass cleaning, and more.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Janitor

  • Dusting and cleaning ceiling vents, surface areas, and counter surfaces
  • Performs general sweeping, scrubbing, mopping of floors.
  • Using vacuuming equipment; vacuums and cleans carpets, perform further treatments such as shampoo or stain-removal as needed.
  • Disposing of trash from bins and containers
  • Polishing furniture and room accessories as needed.
  • Scrubbing sinks, basins, and toilets in bathrooms
  • Cleaning windows, glass surfaces, and mirrors
  • Maintaining and upkeep of all cleaning equipment, supplies, and products
  • Ensuring safe and sanitary storage and care of products
  • Keeping all public spaces neat and tidy
  • Reporting repairs and replacements needed when encountered on the job.
  • Walk the exterior of the building and pick-up trash and debris on a daily basis.
  • Spray and sanitize lunchroom after ever break and lunch time.
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stem cleaning, shampooing or vacuuming
  • Gather and empty trash and recycling.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Operate riding floor scrubbers, vacuums, sweepers and carpet extractors.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.

Minimal Requirements

  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong commitment to SAFETY
  • Knowledge of MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet)
  • Knowledge of janitorial duties
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, meet deadlines, and work with difficult individuals or task assignments
  • Must become familiar with facility layout
  • Detail oriented and willingness to work overtime when necessary
