The Actuarial Principal will have overall responsibility for providing strategic direction and leadership to the Company’s actuarial function. The position participates in the development and execution of strategic plans to achieve business objectives. They will establish and maintain effective relationships with the executive management team and with management in the areas of product, sales, underwriting, finance, medical operations, network operations, and customer management. They will also serve as a key intermediary between GuideWell and various external stakeholders. The position reports to the Vice President, Chief Actuary of Commercial Markets.

Job Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Provide leadership and guidance to and performance management of actuarial department, including budgeting, staffing, development, and succession planning
  • Oversight of the actuarial development program, including recruiting, actuarial exam program, development, mentoring, and community involvement
  • Establish actuarial policies and standards that ensure effective controls and compliance with all applicable statutory, regulatory, professional, and corporate rules and regulations
  • Leadership of actuarial analyses and development of product design and pricing strategies and tactics, including the monitoring of key competitors’ activities and performance
  • Advocate for favorable rate decisions with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
  • Ensure estimates of actuarial assets and liabilities comply with relevant regulatory, accounting, and professional requirements and standards
  • Provide consultative guidance to Finance and Accounting on matters related to actuarial assets and liabilities
  • Leadership of the actuarial component of the Company’s planning process
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, and analyze, develop, and influence current and pending legislation and regulation
  • Provide cross-functional guidance on policies, programs, and practices
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop, implement, and achieve strategic objectives
  • Maintain a visible leadership role within appropriate industry, professional, and community organizations

Job Requirements

  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries
  • 10+ years of actuarial experience
  • 7+ years of experience in the health insurance and/or managed care industry
  • 5+ years of leadership and management experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience communicating organizational strategy to create a clear vision of the future state and business objectives
  • Executive presence and expertise necessary to be viewed with confidence by staff and senior leadership
  • Strong consultative and influencing skills with the ability to handle opposing perspectives and gain consensus
  • Highly motivated self-starter and critical thinker able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong financial and business acumen
  • Highest ethical standards and commitment to the Company’s values – respect, integrity, imagination, courage, and excellence


  • Knowledge of Florida OIR requirements
  • Understanding of the Florida marketplace and GuideWell / Florida Blue products

General Physical Demands: Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Jobs are sedentary if traversing activities are required only occasionally.
