A day in the life
As the Principal Design Technologist, you are a significant contributor to the design, implementation, and successful delivery of UX prototypes. As a key influencer, your prototypes are exemplary in terms of their impact on business partners. You have a hacker mentality and tackle intrinsically hard customer-facing problems through elegant and simple solutions. Your prototypes inspires leaders to invest in new ideas that will revolutionize talent management in Amazon. You will work with a small and highly capable team of scientists, engineers, and product manager. As a hands-on design leader, you split your time between prototyping, UX, and product integration.
About the hiring group
WW Consumer Talent Products Team is looking for a world-class Principal Design Technologist for our science innovation arm, Skunkworks. Skunkworks is a cross-functional incubation team within HR, comprising scientists, engineers, and technologists. We innovate industry-leading scientific solutions that inform human decision making throughout the talent lifecycle. We explore complex problems through innovative solutions in Organizational design, Exec development planning, Talent Diversity, and more! This requires us to invent years ahead of current state. We are intentional about our innovation – we create experiments to prove our “think big” concepts with pilot customers through prototypes, prior to scaling the solution.
Job responsibilities
• Actively participate in concept development and design ideation as part of a small team. You are comfortable with ambiguity and bring clarity to complexity.
• Rapidly build and iterate on polished, high-fidelity prototypes that express design intent, using the best and most appropriate tools and techniques for the task.
• Develop large functional prototypes with significant complexity to prove and sell concepts to our pilot/focus group customers and senior leadership.
• Apply design and engineering to invent, evolve, improve and simplify.
• Work directly with key stakeholders in the business to understand customer problems, engage with scientists and engineers to develop science prototypes, and collect customer feedback from experiments
• Partner with engineering to ensure that interactive techniques and technologies can be translated and scaled for production systems
• Work creatively through and around perceived limitations and/or challenges imposed by the delivery platform to create delightful experiences for our customers.
• Set the standard for prototyping workflow and influences product priorities and trade-offs.
• Effectively present work to all levels of leadership
• Proactively mentor and develop other Designers and Design Technologists
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• 8+ years of experience as a front-end technologist, engineer, or UX prototyper.
• A portfolio of work showing ability to drive innovation and prototyping projects that lead to demonstrated customer/business impact.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
• Expertise in a combination of web and mobile web development technologies, such as React, HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript, web and server programming, Responsive/Adaptive design, AWS services.
• Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
• Strong time-management skills and the ability to be self-directed
• Portfolio of work that demonstrates detailed attention to typography, color, imagery, motion, and graphic elements
• Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and analytical skills including the ability to communicate complex, interactive design concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• MS in computer science, technology, design, or similar.
• Experience with machine learning (ML) tools and methods is ideal.
• The ability to meet ambitious deadlines, manage ambiguity, work autonomously and deliver high-quality work on schedule in a fast-paced environment
• Server-side proficiency (Node.js, Python, Ruby, Java)
