The Data Center Operator Trainee is responsible for becoming proficient at executing and/or monitoring all production jobs, backups, and restores on Costco’s host systems. Additional responsibilities include: monitoring critical systems within the Data Center for program halts/errors, hardware issues or delays in production, and ensuring issues are escalated to the appropriate members of management and support teams, participation in the maintenance and troubleshooting of computer hardware systems within the Data Center, and providing remote hands support on hardware systems within the Data Center as needed.
NOTE: While participating in the Data Center Computer Operator Training Program, an individual will be classified as an hourly trainee for the duration of the program. Upon completion of the program, the individual will be given a proficiency assessment and will undergo the normal interview process for a Data Center Computer Operator 1 position. If the individual is offered a position as a Data Center Computer Operator 1, they will be converted to an Hourly Off Scale status at that time. If they do not qualify for a Data Center Computer Operator 1 position, they will move back to their previous position or an equivalent position. The training is expected to last 12-18 months’.

Program Overview
- First half of the program will focus on intense, hands-on training in Data Center Operations.
- Second half of the program will continue the same focus, but will incorporate initiatives actively being worked on within the Data Center Operations area.
- Every candidate will need to pass an interview process in order to qualify for the training program. The interview process will consist of standardized questions that will be scored and based upon the result, a candidate may be accepted into the training program.
- Curriculum may include: online, self-paced courses, books, webinars/seminars, virtual and mentor instruction.
- At specific points in time during the program, candidates will be required to be assessed for advancement to the next stage in training and continued participation in the program.
- At the end of the program (12-18 month mark), the candidate will be expected to successfully complete a proficiency test and to interview for a Data Center Computer Operator 1 position.
- Examples of the required knowledge to pass the interview include but are not limited to:
- Basic operation of the computer systems and associated peripherals.
- Submission and running all production jobs and backups.
- Monitoring production workflows, system messages, and management notification of halts, delays, or system issues.
- Coordinating problem resolution with various members if IT and service suppliers.
- Maintaining accurate and complete records for system operations, tasks lists, problems, and resolutions.
- Working closely with Operations staff to ensure proper turnover between shifts.
- Preparing and logging all backup tapes for delivery to offsite storage facility.
- Utilizing problem management application to submit and respond to issues.

- Monitoring data center infrastructure and supporting multi-platform systems.
- Handling all user requests received in a timely manner.
- Assisting in maintaining appropriate inventory of necessary supplies.

Required
- Demonstrated aptitude for Information Technology within the Costco environment or equivalent.
- Proficiency in operation of personal computers and associated operating systems and software.
- Must be able to learn quickly, multitask, and prioritize effectively.
- Good written and verbal communication skills,
- General PC navigation skills including Word, Excel, and Google applications with an aptitude for typing.
- Ability to remain focused and work well under pressure.
- Must have troubleshooting skills and the ability to logically think through problem situations.
- Must be self-motivated, responsible, conscientious, detail oriented.
- Must work well in a team environment.
- Scheduling flexibility and after-hours support including, days, swings, evenings, weekends, and graveyard shifts.
Recommended
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent education a plus.
- Computer related network experience is a plus.
- Experience with SAP running on Linux, iSeries, Linux/AIX, and Windows based servers.
- Previous Data Center Operations experience or Familiarity with computer hardware, peripherals, and data cabling a plus.
