BASIC FUNCTION:# The Exercise Physiologist will assist the patient to maintain fitness and improve his/her health as well as providing assistance in recovering from injuries and diseases.# As a member of the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation team, the Exercise Physiologist works in collaboration with nursing and respiratory therapists to orient patients to equipment develop patient goals, to provide and assess progress of individualized exercise prescriptions.# The Exercise Physiologist also educates patients on the importance of exercise and maintaining health lifestyles. SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:# None NATURE AND SCOPE:# This position will interact with patients, families, CCIRH staff and management, as well as physicians. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:# Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital. Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times, keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients. Develop individualized treatment and rehabilitation programs.# Suggests exercise programs, discussing the benefits of any potential risks with patients. Writes initial and follow-up exercise prescriptions for participants, following physician#s recommendations, specifying equipment such as treadmill, track or bike designed to improve mobility and flexibility while hastening recovery. Monitors patient#s exertion and advises patients on continuing exercise after the program completion while encouraging independence. Conducts diagnostic procedures like exercise stress test to evaluate patients# health.# Performs and records related clinical information such as resting and exercising blood pressure, blood glucose levels and applies EKG leads. Demonstrates correct use of exercise equipment and exercise routines. Measures oxygen consumption and lung functioning using spirometer. Measures amount of fat in body using equipment such as hydrostatic scale, skinfold calipers and tape measure to assess body composition. Advises patients about nutrition and on-going exercise regimens. Teaches classes and conducts appropriate research. CORE COMPETENCIES:# Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to demonstrate compassion when dealing with patients who are emotionally upset or in physical pain. Manual dexterity and ability to operate various exercise and diagnostic equipment. Ability to analyze data. Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations. Able to be an effective, collaborative member of a team providing patient care. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:# Bachelor#s Degree in exercise physiology or exercise science. Two (2) to five (5) years of practicing as an exercise physiologist. Current BLS from American Heart Association or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer. Certification by American Society of Exercise Physiologist preferred. Possesses stamina and strength to effectively demonstrate exercise regimen and use proper equipment. CCIRH IS A DRUG AND NICOTINE FREE WORKPLACE
