Adventure Scientists is a 501 c.3 nonprofit organization that designs, builds, and manages field data collection projects at scale, which accelerates solutions to urgent conservation challenges. Our model engages a broader audience in the STEM fields, as we engage and train outdoor enthusiasts and communities to collect high-quality data. Organizational Highlights

  • Our partners span international organizations, government agencies, NGOs, academia, and industry and include National Geographic, the World Economic Forum, World Resources Institute, the US Forest Service, Harvard Medical School, and many more.
  • We have collected genetic and chemical reference libraries for six timber species and plan to grow the project over the next several years. These libraries have enabled the prosecution of timber theft by the DOJ, and are working towards confirmation of wood legality. With other projects, we have helped restore extirpated species to their home ranges, collected the largest dataset on Earth for microplastics, and advanced the identification of the genes responsible for antibiotic resistance. The Forest Specialist Opportunity

If you’re experienced in forest ecology with knowledge of current research trends and a working network of the key stakeholders in the realm of forest conservation, with a passion for science, conservation, and outdoor adventure, we’d love to talk with you!

The Forest Specialist will report to the Head of Strategic Partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design scientifically relevant projects that are appropriate for Adventure Scientists’ unique model of participatory (citizen) science
  • Cultivate, source and develop new partnerships with government, universities, NGOs, and the private sector within the Forest impact area that yield scientifically relevant projects that are appropriate for Adventure Scientists’ unique model of participatory (citizen) science.
  • Collaborate across departments to create support materials for new projects e.g. communication materials, grant materials, data visualizations, sampling designs, etc.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and ambassador for Adventure Scientists, representing our work within forests by presenting at meetings, conferences, participating in public events, and promoting the organization in key forums.

  • Collaborate with scientific advisors to publish Adventure Scientist’ work in high-impact journals, co-present at conferences, etc

We are looking for

  • A leader in science-based forest conservation with a strong network, who has 10+ years of experience working in forests who has created, and led the development of forest conservation initiatives
  • An supporter of citizen science who sees great potential in utilizing well trained members of the public to gather data at an otherwise unattainable scale
  • A details oriented person with a strong understanding of international forest trade including the laws and regulations governing the international timber trade.
  • A culturally sensitive and creative thinker with experience working in multicultural environments and multidisciplinary teams
  • A talented communicator who has a strong ability to articulate complex projects and scientific concepts in a compelling way to a wide variety of audiences
  • A strong writer who can thoughtfully craft communications (external and internal)

Location and Compensation

This is a full-time position that can be based at our offices in Bozeman, MT or work remotely from the United States. This position will require travel and occasional work on weekends or at night should also be expected.

Salary for this role ranges from $70,000 – $85,000 dependent on experience.
