Job Overview
AT&T’s optical platforms team is responsible for the planning, design, technology roadmap, and technology introduction of optical transport to meet AT&T business needs. The role of the optical layer is to provide cost-effective high-speed transport in AT&T’s long-haul and metro networks for the packet layer and large enterprise customers wanting dedicated services. AT&T’s optical platforms team develops the state-of-the-art flexible optical layer that can support 400G today, and higher speeds (e.g. 800G) as they become viable, managed via a centralized software-defined-networking (SDN) controller. In addition, the team maintains the lead role in the industry consortium known as Open ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplier), with the goal of creating an open disaggregated interoperable optical layer and common APIs from each component to the SDN controller. Open ROADM allows AT&T to use multiple vendors’ technologies for the transport equipment (transponders, ROADMs, and pluggable optics), creating competition and significant commoditization of the optical network.
As a Professional Member of Technical Staff, you’ll provide solutions to complex business and technical problems or issues of complex scope using advanced engineering and technical principles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluating the technology roadmaps of optical platform suppliers, making recommendations on long term platform evolution, writing plans to describe the functionality and interworking needed, and working with the suppliers to ensure that their products meet AT&T’s future network needs.
- Tracking developments and new technologies among optical system integrators, component, and sub-system suppliers, with specific focus on pluggable modules (client or lineside), 400G and above rates, silicon photonics, DSP, flexible ROADMs, and advances in optical fibers.
- Collaborating with a cross-organizational team and suppliers to define and develop feature requirements for AT&T’s next-generation flexible, SDN-controlled optical transport networks and working with Layer-2 and Layer-3 partners to support their current and future Services over the Layer-1 ROADM networks.
Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree or higher degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Informational Technology, Data Communications from an accredited university. PhD in an approved field with no experience or Masters in an approved field with a minimum of 1 years of relevant experience or a Bachelors in an approved field with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
