Summary
The VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System is actively recruiting for an Internal Medicine physician to work as a Hospitalist at our VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System located in Leavenworth, KS. The main focus will be inpatient care, which includes managing patients in the inpatient wards, PCU, ICU and the CLC during the night, weekend and holidays. You will play an active role in optimizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the inpatient care process from admission through discharge.
Duties
Education and length of practice will be considered by a Market Pay Review in determining the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).
Work Schedule: 7 days 12 hour shifts every two weeks/pay period.

This announcement will fill three (3) positions in Leavenworth, KS.
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide coverage on inpatient wards/PCU/ICU
- Taking calls on Medicine patients in-house (Med/Surg floor, PCU and ICU) and CLC during nights, weekends and holidays.
- Managing emergencies and writing admission orders and completing required paperwork
- Managing transfers into and out of the facility
- Coordinating hand-off communication after hours
- Participate in, and at times lead, clinical and education administrative committees, task groups, or special projects
- Respond to code blue throughout campus
- Back up physician for rapid response team on campus
- Supervise mid-levels in Topeka and Medicine residents in Leavenworth
- Perform procedures: intubation, vascular access (arterial line/central line), LP, thorocentesis/paracentesis, chest tube and splints.
- ACLS/BLS required and out of OR airway certification preferred
- May need to cover ED occasionally.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Internal Medicine. Experience in teaching service training medical residents and students.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (35 lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13″ to 16″; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted).
