About this role

Job Description Summary

In partnership with Shield AI, GE Aerospace is advancing F110 propulsion system integration for XBAT, a next-generation autonomous aircraft. The XBAT aircraft will take off and land vertically, requiring development of an axisymmetric vectoring exhaust nozzle (AVEN). This effort includes development of nozzle concepts that balance thrust-vector control authority, weight, thermal capability, structural integrity, and manufacturability. Engineering scope includes aerodynamic design, kinematic and mechanical integration, heat transfer analysis, material selection, and validation planning to support high-performance unmanned aircraft operation.

As an XBAT AVEN Mechanical Design Staff Engineer at GE Aerospace, you will lead the design, procurement, and development of components for the vectoring exhaust nozzle module for the F110 engine as a hardware and/or sub-module owner. This role is for a passionate engineering problem solver who understands the design process, tackles technical challenges head-on, and excels at teamwork and collaboration. This position may report to an engineering manager in either Lynn, MA or Evendale, OH with the opportunity to integrate with various internal & external engineering disciplines.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead cross functional teams in the mechanical design and development of complex components and sub-systems for the XBAT AVEN module.
  • Conduct advanced engineering analysis, including but not limited to FEA (Finite Element Analysis) for stress, thermal, vibration, and fatigue, to optimize designs and ensure compliance with performance and safety requirements.
  • Work with product definition teams to issue component and assembly drawings.
  • Develop and execute design verification and validation plans, including component and system-level testing, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical engineers, materials scientists, manufacturing engineers, and project managers to integrate mechanical designs seamlessly into larger systems.
  • Prepare and present technical design reviews, documentation, and reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for design optimization, cost reduction, and manufacturing process improvements.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in mechanical engineering and energy systems.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on complex design challenges.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited university. Master's degree or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis, preferably within the energy, aerospace, or industrial sectors.
  • GE Aerospace will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Desired Characteristics

  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., NX or equivalent) and advanced FEA tools (e.g., Ansys).
  • Strong understanding of material science, manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, casting, additive manufacturing), and design for manufacturing (DFM).
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting complex engineering analyses and interpreting results to guide design decisions.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations relevant to mechanical design and energy systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present technical information.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced environment.
